FAQ

A convertible leash has attachment points and a setup that lets you wear it crossbody or around your waist, so your hands can stay free while you keep a secure connection to your dog.

Match rope thickness to your dog’s size, strength, and how they walk on leash. Smaller dogs often do well with thinner rope for lighter weight, while for larger dogs or strong pullers thicker rope usually works better for a more secure grip.

General recommendations (based on how the rope feels in your hand under pulling):

  • Tiny (5–6 mm): for very small dogs (up to 6–7 kg).
  • Slim (7–8 mm): a balance of comfort and control for small to medium dogs.
  • Standard (9–10 mm): sturdy and comfortable for medium to large dogs or strong pullers.

Choose based on where you walk most often. Busy streets usually feel best with a shorter, more manageable length, while calmer routes often work better with longer options that allow more freedom and natural movement.

As a general guideline: 3–3.5 meters works well for daily city walks, and 6+ meters is a great choice for nature walks where you want to give your dog more space.

A built-in traffic handle makes it easier to keep your dog close in situations like busy streets or passing other dogs. Whether you need it depends on your dog and how they walk.

A quick thing to consider is your dog’s height. By default, the traffic handle is 45 cm long in total (including the carabiner), but we offer length customisation on request. On shorter dogs it can tangle around their legs and feel annoying. With small dogs, it’s often easy enough to shorten up simply by holding the rope, so in those cases we usually don’t find a traffic handle necessary.

While we can’t know for sure how dogs feel the carabiner weight, it’s fair to assume smaller dogs benefit from a smaller size, while for larger dogs the weight plays less of a role. All our carabiners are made from aluminum alloy, feature a locking mechanism, and have a breaking load of 400 kg, so they’re all strong and secure.

General advice based on dog weight:

  • Up to 10 kg: S size carabiner (screw lock)
  • 10+ kg: M or S size carabiner (screw lock)
  • 20+ kg: L size carabiner (twist lock) or M size carabiner (screw lock)

Screw lock vs twist lock

  • Screw lock: loosen the screw first (if it was locked), then push the gate open, and then tighten the screw again to lock it.
  • Twist lock: twist the locking mechanism and push the gate at the same time. It closes automatically and twists back into the locked position when you let go. This can feel tricky if you have any weakness in your hands.

We offer locking carabiners by default for maximum security, but if you’d like a carabiner without a locking mechanism, that’s possible on request.

Wilderwoofs leashes are made from climbing rope and finished with locking aluminum carabiners for a strong, secure setup. If your dog is a strong puller, choosing the right rope thickness and wearing style can also make handling feel more comfortable and controlled.

A classic leash is typically used one way: handheld. A convertible leash can be worn crossbody, around your waist, or handheld, so you can switch your setup depending on the walk.

Convertible leashes also let you “play” with effective length:

  • Crossbody usually makes the leash feel about 1 meter shorter
  • Waist-worn often gives your dog a bit more room than crossbody
  • Handheld gives your dog the full leash length

Use longer lengths where it’s safe and allowed, and shorten up around traffic, tight paths, or crowded areas. The goal is more freedom without sacrificing safety or courtesy.
